Cri & Josh, founders of Asatoma

Asatoma was founded in 2021, during Covid, shortly after I moved to Malta. At the time, I was rebuilding my health through lifestyle changes and nourishing food. A short-lived job in a biscuit factory — everything I was trying to leave behind in terms of food, values, and wellbeing — became the final push. It clarified what I already knew: I needed to create something aligned with my beliefs about food.

I couldn't find what I was looking for — food made with fresh, quality ingredients, free from the additives and shortcuts of industrial processing. Having worked in restaurants in the UK and Portugal, I had enough grounding in catering to take the leap. I didn't do it alone. Asatoma exists because of the constant love, support, and creative input of my partner, Cri.

In the beginning, Asatoma grew from a deep commitment to plant-based living. The food I offered was the food I cooked for myself and my family. There was no separation. I stood fully behind it.

Over time, both the world and my own understanding of health changed. My relationship with food evolved. For deeper nourishment and to resolve long-standing digestive issues, I reintroduced meat into my diet. That shift created a disconnect between what I was eating and what Asatoma offered. Sitting with that disconnect was uncomfortable — but ignoring it felt dishonest. Authenticity won.

Today, Asatoma reflects where I am now: a place rooted in respect for food, its origins, and the connection it creates between people and the land. I avoid mass-produced, industrial ingredients and choose consciously-sourced, ethically-raised, and sustainably-grown food. Whether plant-based or animal-based, the principle is unchanged: REAL FOOD.

Our motto has always been Asatoma: Conscious Food Choices. Conscious now means honesty — offering food that aligns with lived experience, care, and integrity.

Our vision has grown beyond meals. We are creating a space for community — a table where people can gather, eat well, and feel grounded. No pressure. No pretence. Just food, done properly.

Behind it all, it's simply us:
Josh, in the kitchen, cooking as your chef and turning what the earth offers into vibrant, comforting plates;
Cri, holding PR, communication, and accounts with care and intention; and
Enya Rose, our small but mighty kitchen mascot, keeping life beautifully chaotic.

Welcome to our kitchen!
With love and gratitude,
Josh, Cri & Enya

Food That Grows with the Seasons

Every dish is built around seasonal, local ingredients, prioritising organic produce whenever possible. We work closely with farmers and growers in Gozo and Malta, supporting our community while reducing food miles, packaging, and waste. Our menus reflect what the land is offering — from soil, to kitchen, to table.

Rooted in Community & Care

We believe food is a vehicle for connection. Everything we do is guided by the intention to nourish — not just through what's on the plate, but through the way people are welcomed, held, and fed.
